Movie. Ever" hate on it, I mean, you can't deny that Kelly was really trying to do something here and the motherfucker put his all into it. But I guess the more audacious something is, the more extreme of a reaction it's gonna get -- but seriously, though: "Worst. Movie. Ever."?

It's just too bad it came off as an overly-ambitious mess for me (even actress Beth Grant seemed to acknowledge this with her comparison of Southland to Picasso's "Guernica"), but your interpretation has convinced me to check this out again sooner than expected (I was waiting to see if the extended, possibly purer/more-sense-making Cannes cut would ever surface).

Anyway, it might not change my overall opinion, but it'll probably make it a more interesting/rewarding experience to watch it through Pilot Abilene's eyes. I still won't forgive Howard Stern for guilt-tripping Artie Lange out of appearing in the goddamn thing, though.EFChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03707319383245900449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8319363792379191152.post-82707018222081599422011-08-20T11:09:48.950-07:002011-08-20T11:09:48.950-07:00That said, I think I'll have to check out SOUT...That said, I think I'll have to check out SOUTHLAND TALES now, because I had no idea it had those SNL alumni in it. (I loved Cheri Oteri during her first season on the show (before her characters were repeated so many times that they got tiring), and I've been a fan of Amy Poehler since Comedy Central's short-lived Upright Citizens Brigade series.)Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693991193471498344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8319363792379191152.post-9380239914911580822011-08-20T11:00:46.404-07:002011-08-20T11:00:46.404-07:00I'd heard that a-fantasy-in-his-final-moments ...I'd heard that a-fantasy-in-his-final-moments interpretation of DONNIE DARKO before, but I'm not sure if the director has ever hinted anywhere that it was what he intended (though if he said it in an interview somewhere, you'd probably be more likely to have read it than me).

When I was trying to figure out what the ending meant (having only watched the shorter cut at that point), all the additional information I found seemed to indicate that the director's intent really was that the main character had supernatural powers that allowed him to make that sacrifice. Which I thought was an astoundingly weak ending on multiple levels.

Mind you, I'd been trying to figure out the ending because I'd enjoyed the overall style of the film up until the end -- my disappointment with the ending could be compared to the remade BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, in that I kept watching DONNIE DARKO to see how it was all going to wrap up, only to be left unsatisfied when it appeared it hadn't been going anywhere in particular. Even after discovering that the ending was meant to be self-sacrifice, I was still left with the aftertaste of a movie that seemed to be more style over substance, playing itself off as being more clever than it actually was.

If you enjoyed it, I'm not gonna hold it against you. ;-) I've had plenty of friends who've enjoyed DONNIE DARKO (and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA's final episode). But I still think the film's concluding theme of "her life would be better without me" was done much better (and more comprehensibly) in the director's cut of BUTTERFLY EFFECT (yes, I just called the director's cut of BUTTERFLY EFFECT a good movie!).Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07693991193471498344noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8319363792379191152.post-73110261127823247852011-08-20T09:58:17.153-07:002011-08-20T09:58:17.153-07:00Impressive and absolutely intelligent and simpler ...Impressive and absolutely intelligent and simpler way to see the films with the involvement of Richard Kelly. This view is completely valid and it made me think a lot about my own interpretations of all these films, but I stand by my more complicated and hard to understand vision on all of his films as the depiction of real acts of mesianic sacrifice. Thanks for this, you really put the blogathon in another higher level.Jaime Grijalbahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00175192502767519362noreply@blogger.com
