I think you liked it far more than I did. For me, though Shutter Island had style, vitality, and adequate tension, I did indeed guess the outcome early on, and that did bother me, especially when I'd read "Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane" (later The Ninth Configuration) and seen the film by the latter name. I basically felt similar material was handled far better in The Ninth Configuration than in Shutter Island. The saving grace for me.....the voiced decision of "whether to live as a monster or die as a good man". The thing is, I didn't see the ending coming in The Ninth Configuration, or the "stinger" either. There was also such a complete absurdity and massive and potentially dangerous changes in tone that feasibly would have ruined the film if handled any differently. To me, to compare the two very similar films would be akin to comparing a virtuoso playing a Bach Fugue to a very talented musician playing "Jesus loves me". The correct notes might have been played and played well, but one is much more difficult to pull off. The Ninth Configuration was simply a better handled version of a very similar story. I didn't hate Shutter Island, nor was I sorry I'd seen it, but it was a washed-out version of something I'd already seen performed masterfully.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
